Nicholas, George (1754–25 July 1799), lawyer, was born in Williamsburg, Virginia, the son of Robert Carter Nicholas, a planter and treasurer of the colony of Virginia, and Anne Cary. He devoted his life to the perpetuation of a social and political order dominated by gentlemen such as himself. A descendant of the Carters, one of the wealthiest and most influential families in colonial Virginia, he grew up expecting to command the attention of his peers and the deference of everyone else. His education, which prepared him for a life as the independent master of his household and his county, climaxed with the study of law at the College of William and Mary.
