Palmer, Arnold (10 Sept. 1929–25 Sept. 2016), golfer, was born Arnold Daniel Palmer, the first of four children born to Milfred Jerome “Deacon” Palmer and Doris (Morrison) Palmer in the rail town of Youngstown, Pennsylvania. “Deke” Palmer was a ditch digger who became groundskeeper at the nine-hole Latrobe Country Club. The Palmers paid fifteen dollars a month to rent a house next to a privy near the sixth tee. Deke walked with a limp because of polio, and his son loved following him on the golf course. Palmer’s earliest memory was when he was three and his father first showed him how to hold a golf club....
