John Garraty is a well-known biographer, editor of many reference works, and author of dozens of highly successful textbooks including The American Nation (now in its ninth edition). Garraty was educated at Brooklyn College and Columbia University. He taught at Michigan State University before joining the Columbia University History Department in 1959. Over the following three decades he was appointed to a chaired professorship and served as department chairman. Garraty has also served as president of the Society of American Historians. He retired from teaching at Columbia in 1990.
Mark C. CarnesProfessor of History
Barnard College
Mark Carnes has published numerous books in American social and cultural history. After graduating from Harvard College in 1974, Carnes did his doctoral work at Columbia University. He taught at Vassar in 1981 and joined the Barnard faculty in 1982. He was promoted to full professor in 1994 and has chaired both the History and American Studies departments there. He has written several books on the history of gender and has edited a number of reference works.
