Schroeder, William J. (14 February 1932–14 August 1986), longest-surviving recipient of the Jarvik-7 artificial heart, was born in Jasper, Indiana, the son of Alois Schroeder, an insurance salesman, and Lorena Miller. Schroeder, like his mother and father, grew up in the small Indiana town of Jasper with a deeply ingrained loyalty to family and community. Schroeder was popular and well liked in high school for his humor and energy. The caption under his 1950 Jasper High School yearbook read: “A sense of humor and wit to enliven the bluest of days.” His drive and energy, which earned him the nickname “Bull,” served him well when he was presented with the opportunity to be the second recipient of the Jarvik-7 artificial heart....
