Tilghman, Benjamin Chew (26 October 1821–03 July 1901), inventor, manufacturer, and soldier, was born in Philadelphia, Pennsylvania, the son of Benjamin Tilghman, a lawyer, and Anna Maria McMurtrie. In 1837 he entered the University of Pennsylvania after two years at Bristol College in New Jersey, graduating with a B.A. in 1839.
