Emery, Henry Crosby (21 December 1872–06 February 1924), economist and businessman, was born in Ellsworth, Maine, the son of Lucilius Alonzo Emery and Anne Stetson Crosby. His father was a respected lawyer who served as chief justice of the Maine Supreme Court and as a professor of medical jurisprudence at Bowdoin College. His mother instilled in her son a tolerant Christian spirit. After attending primary and secondary schools in Ellsworth, Emery entered Bowdoin College at age sixteen. His academic interests included economics, literature, and philosophy. He earned a B.A. from Bowdoin in 1892.
