Scudder, John (03 September 1793–13 January 1855), first medical missionary from the United States, was born in Freehold, Monmouth County, New Jersey, the son of Joseph Scudder, a lawyer, and Maria Johnston. As a child Scudder often roamed the streets of Freehold gathering kindling for poor people. He earned a degree from the College of New Jersey (Princeton) in 1811.
